Almost everyone, young or old, has experienced abdominal pain at some point. In many cases, it’s easy to pinpoint the source of the pain, such as a spicy meal that didn’t agree with you. But other times it may not be as simple to diagnose, or to treat.
Abdominal pain can be caused by a variety of ailments or conditions, and can range from mild to severe no matter what the cause.
Some causes of abdominal pain are:

- Indigestion
- Constipation
- Menstrual cramps
- Food allergies
- Food poisoning
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- Gallstones
- Endometriosis
- Crohn’s disease
- Appendicitis
WHEN TO SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION
You should always seek medical attention right away if your abdominal pain is severe, or if it is accompanied by any of these symptoms, which could indicate an internal problem that needs attention:
- Fever
- Inability to keep food down for more than one day
- Constipation accompanied by vomiting
- Breathing difficulty
- Painful or frequent urination
- Pain occurs during pregnancy
- Abdomen tender to the touch
- Pain follows an injury to the abdomen
- Pain persisting or getting worse
If you do need to seek medical attention, you can help your doctor better diagnose and treat your pain by giving him as much information as possible.
Helpful information would include:
- When the pain first started, and how frequently pain episodes occur
- Whether or not you’ve ever experienced similar pain
- Whether pain episodes begin gradually or occur suddenly
- A description of the severity of the pain
- Whether you’ve found anything that can relieve the pain
- Characteristics of the pain: sharp, dull, stabbing, throbbing, steady, cramping
- Whether there are any accompanying symptoms such as fever, vomiting, chills, sweats, diarrhea, constipation, bleeding
It will also be important that you provide your doctor with a thorough medical history, including any previous illnesses, surgeries, or medical procedures. You should also alert your doctor to any family history of gastrointestinal illness or disease, or if any of your family members are suffering from an illness with symptoms similar to yours. Lastly, it’s critical to be candid with the doctor and medical staff regarding any use of alcohol, smoking, or chemical dependencies as these can also be associated with abdominal pain.
An important note: You should seek immediate medical attention if:
- You experience pain and tenderness to the touch in your lower right abdomen area, especially if you also have a fever and/or vomiting. These may be signs of appendicitis, which requires medical attention right away.
- You are pregnant and have abdominal pain or vaginal bleeding. These may be symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage.
Not all abdominal pain is serious or life-threatening; often it is relatively minor and easily treated. But properly identifying your symptoms and seeking medical attention when necessary can make a big difference.

Thank you for taking such great care of me on my recent visit. I have never been to the emergency room for pain. It was scary. I probably wasn’t the easiest patient yet felt well cared for and nobody made me feel like a crazy lady for showing up in the middle of the night in my PJs and robe. Hopefully, I do not have to do such a thing again but if so I’ll be more comfortable knowing that I’ll be in good hands.

The staff was really nice. Great customer service I got in and out within an hour. Dr. J. Jackson came in to do his assignment and gave me what I needed and I was able to be on my way. The rest of the staff was real nice I filled out my paper and they help with questions. The assistant told me what I needed to do and it got done he was very efficient. Overall I give y’all 10 stars… Great Experience!

I had a great experience. From when you walk in they are extremely welcoming and friendly. I went in with intense pain and they did everything to make me feel comfortable and find a solution. I had an amazing nurse named Moses who was extremely kind and helpful. The doctor was quick to respond, very kind and informative This is by far the best experience I’ve encountered. Definitely recommend their services.

I went in today for a bad migraine. It was around 6:30 am and no other patients. I was greeted and taken back. They got me started on some meds. The dr came in and was friendly and quick. He didn’t ask me 100 questions to get to the point. He gave me something to relieve the problem and a prescription. I didn’t have to ask for a work note he automatically wrote one out. The staff was very clear on instructions and what they were going to do. Felt better, checked out, and paid. It was fast and convenient since my dr doesn’t open till 8 and hope to get in the same day. I’d go back. The staff asked the main questions needed, Before giving me meds asked if I had a ride or by myself. which makes a huge difference with migraine medicine. In and out in 2 hours.
